It was great to see so many families at the Home & School 'Big Breakfast' this morning.
I did manage to say 'Hi' to quite a few families before I was roped in to cook the bacon.

Congratulations Neirin, 'Player of the Year' for his rugby team.

I wonder how long the linking cubes are??
How can we find out.....

The cubes were from the wall to the door ....

Patterns

Jo brought in the biggest recorder in the South Island to show us.
It is worth about $12,000.00!

We wondered how she could reach up to play it. But it has a pipe that reaches down.

Jo played a tune, and Lily guessed correctly that it was 'The Teddy Bears Picnic.'
We played 'Hot Cross Buns' together.

Thanks for bringing it in, Jo!

The children worked together to problem solve the answer to this question.
Well done to everyone!

Happy 8th Birthday for today, Taylor. We hope you had a good day.
On Friday we were so busy at Discovery time no one took any photos!
The children worked on their dioramas, weeded the garden, played volleyball, and looked in the box at the 'glow in the dark' things.
The dioramas are looking spectacular! Some children still have some bits and pieces to complete but that won't take long.

This week we got some new multi link cubes for our maths.
We wondered how many .....
We were thinking of efficient ways to work it out.
Sorting them into colours ....

Keeping a tally of how many ...

Grouping into 5's and 10's ....

Joining the groups together .... and we had 50 of each colour!

We found out we had 499 cubes altogether because there were only 49 orange ones.

Today we wrote some 3,4,3,4 Poems about 'Jack & the Beanstalk'.
We hope you enjoy them.

Cruel, evil giant
Lived in a castle
Killed Jack’s father
Took all his stuff.
             Cesar

One hungry giant
One beanstalk growing up
Up went Jack
To the tippy top.
             Eve

Stinky bad breath
Tired fearless rude giant
Brown rotten teeth
Fee fi fo fum!
             Lincoln

Rude evil giant
Stole Jack’s father’s stuff
Small rotten teeth
Jack’s mother was worried.
             Kiana

Dragon like breath
Slow like a sloth
Rude grumpy strong
Fee fi fo fum!
             Caezar

Suspicious mean giant
Knew about Jack’s father
In a castle
With his wife – lonely.
             Dennis

Big noisy giant
Took Jack’s father’s money
Greedy fat rude
Fee fi fo fum!
             Ella

In a castle
The giant is mean
Big hairy legs
Fat, hungry for food.
             Neirin

Cruel rude giant
Lived in a castle
Ate Jack’s Dad
Got all his stuff!
             Leo

Rude mean giant
Fe fi fo fum
Look out Jack
Coming to get you!
             Zoē

Big fearless giant
Lived in a castle
Chomps on food
Big sharp rotten teeth.
             Kadin

Stole Jack’s father’s money
Jack climbed up
Took back his stuff.
             Zade

 Suspicious cruel giant
Breath like a dragon
Didn’t notice Jack
Slow like a sloth.
             Ashveer

In a castle
The mean giant lived
Counting his money
Fee fi fo fum!
             Frank

Big rotten teeth
Slow, steady after Jack
Climbing down, down
He fell down dead!
             Vianne

Slow mean giant
Fee fi fo fum
Look out Jack
I will eat you!
             Lily

Rude mean giant
Fee fi fo fum
Looking for Jack
Climbing down the beanstalk.

On Friday during Discovery time we had a visit from Evan, our librarian, Karen's son. He is an expert at making models so he had some great suggestions for our dioramas - he had even been to 'Creative Junk' and he brought some resources to share with us. Thanks Evan!

We had a space snack - as suggested by astronaut, Chris Hadfield - a tortilla with peanut butter and honey. Your child will be able to tell you why we didn't have bread!

We were also invited to watch the dress rehearsal for the Senior Kapahaka's performance. They will be performing at the Horncastle Arena on Tuesday night. Tino pai!

Wow, a cool model of the space shuttle, Discovery.

We all enjoyed our visit from Science Alive today.
Special thanks to Lily's Mum, Rosa for her help. We were lucky to have Karen and two senior students to help us out too. Ka pai.

The sun

The children named the planets and 'hung' them in the correct order

We looked at constellations

Having a 'go' with craters

The moon  orbits the earth

Which planet is?

Or this?

We found out some interesting facts

Why is Venus the hottest planet?

Everyone is interested in Jupiter's red spot

Some stars are hotter than others!

We could easily see hoe the moon orbits Earth and Earth orbits the sun

Having a 'go' with craters

Everyone made their own Milky Way.

What do we need in space?
On Friday we are going to have a space snack....

The Moon Box was very interesting.
Check out the moon each night ...
